Tips to Help Bases

Lift with Your Legs, Not Your Back

Always maintain a straight back and lift using the strength of your legs. This approach not only makes stunts easier but also reduces the risk of injury.

Coordinate Arm and Leg Movements

Initiate the lift by synchronizing your leg and arm movements. Begin the lift with a dip using both legs and arms. As momentum builds, focus on completing the lift with your arms slightly ahead of your legs. This strategy utilizes the stronger leg muscles efficiently, ensuring smoother lifts and better control.

Catch High and Absorb Impact

When catching a cradle or transitioning, reach up to catch the flier high. Absorb the impact with your legs upon catching to ensure a secure and comfortable landing for the flier.

Provide Security with Foot Squeezing

Secure the flier by gently squeezing their foot or feet. This technique enhances the flier’s stability and minimizes the need for constant adjustments during the stunt, offering greater control overall.

Position Your Foot Underneath the Flier’s

When starting a pyramid or lifting from a ground position, position the flier’s foot on top of your own foot (with your hands supporting the heel and toe). This distribution of weight helps reduce strain on your hands and enhances stability.

Maintain Focus on the Flier

Keep your attention on the flier, particularly around their waist area. This focus allows you to react swiftly to any changes in the stunt, ensuring stability and safety throughout the performance.

Prioritize Safety of Head, Neck, and Back

In case of a fall, immediately release the flier’s feet and aim to catch them around the waist or under the arms to prevent head, neck, or back injuries. Avoid holding onto the flier’s feet during a fall to minimize the risk of accidents.

By following these tips, bases can enhance their performance, maintain safety, and contribute to successful cheerleading stunts.
